Curran, who resides in St. Paul, appeared before the Council and stated that he was engaged in the business of selling and installing metal awnings. He stated that he had received a permit to make an installation from our building inspector but did not realize that our present ordinance provides a minimum height from the sidewalk of eight feet. He stated that in a good many instances eight feet is too high to give the necessary protection from the sun, and that in most cities the minimum is seven feet. On motion of Councilman Charlsen seconded by Councilman Bartkey it was decided to amend our present ordinance and set the minimum height at seven feet providing it meets with the approval of the building inspector. The Building Inspector stated that the present building committee has not met in the pest year and not more than three times since the building code was adopted which is almost four years ago. That an active building committee would be a great asset to the building inspector and the City Council, because new ideas in building methods and materials are being introduced so fast that it is quite a problem for one person with limited experience to make important decisions. He suggested that the present building committee be dismissed and a new committee created, consisting of architects and all contractors in the various building trades that operate within the City. He also suggested a revolving chairmanship for the committee, having a new chairman each ,year, which would meet at least four Mains annually.
