We had two strong applicants, and as has happened in the past, our hope was that the "second choice"applicant would apply again in the future.(The nominating committee deliberated between two applicants before voting 2-1 to recommend Ms. Cox.) Later in that same July board meeting, another trustee—Doug Menikheim—announced his resignation from the board effective at the conclusion of that meeting. So the board faces another vacancy, one we weren't able to act on during that meeting because of how the agenda was structured and when this second vacancy was announced. The board discussed a desire to fill this second vacancy quickly, which is always a priority for me personally. As such,we discussed the possibility of selecting a second applicant from among the three who applied to fill the first vacancy. The board was unable to formally act upon this, but it was clear that the will of the board was to aim to fill this second vacancy with applicant Sharon Hollatz as soon as possible. As you know, the city council is the appointing authority,so the lack of an official action from the library board need not impede the process. If,however, appointing Ms. Hollatz to fill this second vacancy immediately is not feasible, the library board can take formal action at its August meeting to recommend this appointment. That's hardly a burden;it's just one month more of an empty seat on a busy board! Let me know if you have any questions or would like to discuss.Thank you for time.
