HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-126 (Human Rights Award –Mary Harcey)I iwater THE O 1 N THPLACE OF M I N N E 0 1 A RESOLUTION 2016-126 STILLWATER HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD MARY HARCEY WHEREAS, the Stillwater Human Rights Commission requested nominations for the 2016 Stillwater Human Rights Award. This year we had two winning candidates; and WHEREAS, MARY HARCEY has been nominated for being a member of the Sircles, Restorative Justice group in Stillwater, an alternative to a court sentence, that listen and give support to individuals who have been arrested for minor infractions, involving most often family relationships. They use a carved Eagle feather as a tool that allows only one person to speak at a time and share their thoughts on how change can improve their family life; and WHEREAS, MARY assists with the Sircles process that allows individuals to form a plan that affects their future, regarding the way one handles the stresses that have occurred in daily life situations. It can begin a new pattern in the individuals' lives. Core values are discussed using stones that have the words imprinted on them. The group instills the importance of these core values in dealing with life decisions and ones' actions; and WHEREAS, MARY accepts each individual where they are in their life, supporting them to make a difference to change their life for a better plan; and WHEREAS, MARY attends Sircle that meets three times a month for one and half to three hours at Family Means here in Stillwater. The participants attend two times a month for three months with an additional one time per month for up to a year. Some of the individuals return to become new Sircle volunteer members to help others who come to this program; and WHEREAS, MARY also serves on the committee to Act on Alzeimers. The group is creating an understanding of the disease so that our city can become a Dementia Friendly Community, involving education and support. No THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Stillwater, Minnesota, one 2016 Human Rights Award is presented to MARY HARCEY in appreciation of her outstanding leadership and dedication to human rights, and is hereby commended for those efforts. Adopted by the City Council this 21st day of June, 2016. TED KOZLOWSKI, MAYOR
