HomeMy WebLinkAbout2015-062 RESOLUTION 2015-062 RESOLUTION SUPPORTING STILLWATER AREA ACT ON ALZHEIMER'S WHEREAS, Stillwater is a compassionate and collaborative community; and WHEREAS, Stillwater is aging. 13% of Stillwater residents -approximately 2,428 people-are over the age of 65 according to the 2013 estimate, US Census Bureau; and WHEREAS,as the population continues to age,the number of people living with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias will greatly increase. Approximately one in nine people over 65 and one-third of people over 85 have Alzheimer's disease; and WHEREAS, estimates are that more than 1,000 residents of the Stillwater Area live with Alzheimer's or another form of dementia. 70% of people with dementia live at home and need support from families and community members; and WHEREAS,these residents' families, friends; and other supporters are also deeply affected. They provide care and assistance, usually willingly out of love and devotion,but often at great personal cost to their own health and well-being; and WHEREAS,ACT on Alzheimer's is a volunteer-driven collaboration bringing Minnesotans together to create supportive environments for everyone touched by Alzheimer's disease and prepare Minnesota for its impacts.A team of residents, community organizations, health care providers,businesses, government and others is working together to make the Stillwater Area dementia-friendly; and WHEREAS, a dementia-friendly community is one that is informed,safe and respectful of people with dementia and their caregivers,supporting them in having a good quality of life; and WHEREAS, more than 200 community members have been involved in assessing the needs of the Stillwater Area and selecting priorities for action. WHEREAS, the community is driven to improve the experience of people living with dementia and their families in the Stillwater Area and has assembled committed partners to make this a reality. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED,that the City Council of Stillwater supports the Stillwater Area ACT on Alzheimer's initiative and encourages all residents to take action to make this a truly dementia-friendly community.
