MEMORANDUM '1 r
TO: Steve Russell, Community Development Director
Downtown Parking Commission
FROM: Cindy Shilts, Building Official
DATE: January 11, 2005
SUBJECT: Accessible Parking Space for Lofts of Stillwater
During the plan review process, an issue regarding an accessible parking space for
visitors/public has come up. Minnesota State Building Code Section 1341.0428, Subpart
2 ADAAG 4.6.2, requires that an accessible parking space shall be located on the shortest
accessible route of travel from the adjacent parking to an accessible entrance.
In short, the accessible parking space in the parking lot to the north of the Lofts building
is approximately 438 feet from the building's main entrance. This is an unacceptable
distance to travel. To meet the requirements of the building code, an accessible space
will have to be designated on the street in front of the building. The architect and owner
of the project have agreed to paying for the sign and will install the sign when the new
sidewalks are poured.
I have attached the code section referenced above and a copy of the sight plan showing
where the space needs to be placed to meet with required compliance criteria.
