STILLWATER HUMAN RIGHTS)V,"APD
SARA DAINION
WHEREAS, THE STILLWATER HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION REQUESTED NOMINATIONS FOR
STILLWATER*s HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD. AND
WHEREAS, SARA DAmON HAS BEEN NOMINATED FOR HER ACTIVE ROLE AS A LOCAL EDUCATOR
TEACHING GEOGRAPHY AT STILLWATER JUNIOR HIGH WHERE SHE HAS PRESENTED A POWERFUL
PARTNERSHIP FOR LEARNING AND SERVICE TO PROMOTE UNDERSTANDING ON ISSUES RANGING FROM
WATER SHORTAGES TO CULTURAL DIFFERENCES; AND
WHEREAS, SHE BUILT A CURRICULUM EXPLAINING THE HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES IN SOUTH SUDAN
AND FACILITATING FOR OVER 5 YEARS THE STILLWATER JR. HIGH H2O WATER FOR THE SOUTH
SUDAN PROJECT. HER STUDENTS DISCOVERED INNOCENT CIVILIANS CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE BY
READING "THEY POURED FIRE ON Us FROM THE SKY". SHE ALSO PROVIDED A PERSONAL CONNECTION TO
MEET WITH ONE OF THE AUTHORS AND A "LOST Boy OF SUDAN'", BENJAMIN AJAK. SARA INSPIRED HER
STUDENTS TO CHAMPION A CAMPAIGN TO HELP VICTIMS OF THIS TRAGIC CIRCUMSTANCE, AND
COLLABORATING WITH THE HELP OF H2O FOR LIFE, SARA AND HER STUDENTS RAISED OVER $41,000 IN
STILLWATER TO FUND 5 CLEAN WELLS TO PROVIDE WATER TO THE VILLAGERS OF SOUTH SUDAN; AND
WHEREAS, THE VILLAGERS OF SUDAN HAVE GAINED A BASIC, HUMAN RIGHT: ACCESS TO SAFE
WATER; HER STUDENTS LEARNED THAT WE SHARE A COMMON HUMAN EXPERIENCE WITH PEOPLE WHO
MIGHT LOOK AND LIVE DIFFERENTLY, AND PROVIDING STUDENTS WITH DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF
GEOGRAPHY CONCEPTS RELATED TO CULTURE, MIGRATION AND THE REFUGEE EXPERIENCE; AND
WHEREAS, SARA IS KNOWN FOR GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND HER DUTIES AS A TEACHER IN ORDER
TO HELP HER STUDENTS GAIN REAL-LIFE EXPERIENCE THAT. APPLIES TO THE STUDY OF GEOGRAPHY, AND
HAS PARTNERED WITH THE, DNR TO DEVELOP THE NATIONALLY RENOWNED "FIREWISE" CURRICULUM.
Now THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF STILLWATER,
MINNESOTA, THE HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD IS PRESENTED TO SARA DAmON IN APPRECIATION OF HER
OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP AND DEDICATION TO HUMAN RIGHTS, AND IS HEREBY COMMENDED FOR
THOSE EFFORTS.
