HomeMy WebLinkAbout1998-12-07 HPC MIN• • Heritage Preservation Commission December 7, 1998 Present; Roger Tomten, chairperson Jeff Johnson, Robert Kimbrel, Brent Peterson Howard Lieberman and Frank Langer Others: Sue Fitzgerald, Planner Absent: Katherine Francis Mr. Tomten called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. Approval of Minutes: Mr. Lieberman noted that he was at the November 2, 1998 meeting, he arrived a little late. Mr. Johnson, seconded by Mr. Liberman, moved approval of the minutes as corrected; all in favor. Case No. DR/98 -46. Design review of exterior signage at 1471 Stillwater Blvd. Joe Gillett, applicant. Mr. Gillett was present. Mr. Langer asked if all the other sign at the strip center were red. Mr. Gillett brought pictures of the center showing red and yellow lettering throughout. The applicant stated that he would be renting the north side of the old Video Update part of the center. Mr. Peterson, seconded by Mr. Kimbrel moved approval as conditioned; all in favor. Case No. DR/98 -47. Design review of exterior signage at 1701 Curve Crest Blvd. Cheryl O'Donnell, representing Stillwater Medical/Dental Building. Ms. O'Donnell presented a colored rendering of the proposed signage. Mr. Kimbrel asked if the signs would be internally illuminated. Mr. Tomten stated that internal illuminated signs were allowed in that zoning district. Ms. O'Donnell said all signs would be internally lit with the exception of the directional signs. Mr. Tomten asked if the entrance sign could have just the address on it and not the name of the medical center on it. All agreed. Jeff Johnson motioned to approve the request with the conditions that there be no additional signs, signs B not be internally lit, signs be installed according to the setback ordinances, and entrance signs have only the address on them. Motion passed unanimously. Case No. DR/98 -48. Design review of exterior signage for Quantum Digital at 1305 Frontage Road. David Pressley, applicant. Jeffrey Corbo representing Quantum Digital. Mr. Corbo presented a colored elevation drawing of the proposed changes to the existing 0 0 Quantum Digital sign. All lettering will be green. Bob Kimbrel, seconded by Brent Peterson motioned approval. Motion of approval passed unanimously. Other Items Zephyr Update: Ron Gullickson and Russ Hultman representing the Zephyr. Mr. Gullickson and Mr. Hultman are requesting changes to the approved design for a 430 foot long car port for the Minnesota Zephyr. They want to eliminate the ridge at the top of the roof and the overhang slope accents. Mr. Gullickson said the overhang projections would probably be constructed at a later date. He also stated that the roof would be shingles and the posts would be spread apart farther. Screening will be installed in the interior of the roof to keep the birds and animals out. Mr. Gullickson said the changes were being requested because of the budget. Mr. Tomten said that they needed a complete package, including a site plan and some building elevations. Mr. Johnson motioned the project be tabled and an application be brought in to the next meeting. The application should include: a site plan, elevation drawings and detail drawings. Mr. Liberman seconded the motion; all in favor. Fiscal Year End Report to SHPO. Ms. Fitzgerald stated that the Commission had doubled the number of design reviews from the year before. 1997 they reviewed 36 cases. In the year 1998 they reviewed 72 cases.
