HomeMy WebLinkAbout2024-032 (Fire Department Application for (FEMA) Staffing for (SAFER) Grant to Hire Additional Firefighter Personnel)City of Stillwater Washington County, Minnesota RESOLUTION 2024-032 RESOLUTION APPROVING STILLWATER FIRE DEPARTMENT APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY (FEMA) STAFFING FOR ADEQUATE FIRE AND EMERGENCY RESPONSE (SAFER) GRANT TO HIRE ADDITIONAL FIREFIGHTER PERSONNEL WHEREAS, the City of Stillwater Fire Department provides services to the City of Stillwater and surrounding communities, including Stillwater Township, City of Grant, and May Township, covering an area of 53 square miles and serving a population of 28,000; and WHEREAS, current Stillwater Fire Department staffing provides for 2-3 on -duty firefighters on a 24/7 schedule and additional firefighter staffing would provide for a more optimum fully staffed 4-person fire engine crew 24/7 to better serve Stillwater and surrounding communities for emergency response and fire -related hazards; and WHEREAS, the FEMA SAFER grant will fund firefighter positions that will allow the Stillwater Fire Department to provide a 4 person fully staffed fire engine crew on a 24/7 schedule versus the current staffing level of 2-3 firefighters on duty in order to better respond to emergencies and provide Stillwater and the surrounding communities served by the Fire Department with adequate protection from fire and fire -related hazards; and WHEREAS, the FEMA SAFER grant provides firefighter funding for a three-year period and does not require a city cost share or a maintenance of effort commitment beyond the SAFER Program end date. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Stillwater, Minnesota hereby approves the Stillwater Fire Department's application for the FEMA SAFER grant to hire 4 additional firefighter personnel for a three-year period; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Stillwater also agrees to the terms of implementation and administration of the SAFER grant if awarded and authorizes the Mayor of the City of Stillwater to sign all necessary documents for the SAFER grant application on behalf of the City of Stillwater.
