DOMINIUM CORPORATION HOUSING FOR THE ELDERLY
Chairman Jeffrey Zoller called the meeting to order. He stated that the
reason for the meeting was to discuss the Commission's feelings as to whether
or not the proposed Dominium Corporation housing for the elderly will adversely
affect the character of downtown Stillwater. The Washington County Historical
Society had asked for the Commission's recommendation.
Mr. Dan Avchen and Mr. Jack Safar represented Dominium Corporation. Mr.
Avchen stated that no environmental impact statement had been requested. He
pointed out that Dominium needs a letter for the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency
stating that RTR is pleased with the project. He then showed the Commissioners
plans of the proposed building. He pointed out that the building would be brick
on three sides--the red-orange brick to conform with Stillwater's downtown area.
The stucco will be either a cooler grey or a warmer beige-grey. They hope to be-
gin construction in September.
A representative of RTR stated that he felt the building would be something
that will have enduring value. He pointed out that it would be nice if it
weren't seven stories, but he personally didn't have any objections to it.
Mary Lou True felt that the building did not have any architectural
redeeming values.
Charles Swanson moved that the Chairman of the Heritage Preservation Commis-
sion draft a letter to the Washington County Historical Society stating that the
Heritage Preservation Commission feels that the Dominium Corporation's proposed
housing for the elderly will not adversely affect the character of downtown
Stillwater. The motion was seconded and passed, with one opposition by Mary Lou
True.
ADJOURNMENT
The meeting was adjourned at 7:25 P.M.
